Steps and methods for replacing wheel hub bearings and matters for installing bearings

Wheel hub bearings are a very important component for vehicles. Wheel hub bearings play a role in driving the vehicle, carrying the body and providing precise guidance for the rotation of the wheel hub. According to the needs of modern vehicles, wheel hub bearings are constantly being updated. , most vehicles on the market now use 2nd or 3rd generation bearings. In order to let everyone know more when maintaining or replacing wheel hub bearings, HIY share The specific steps for disassembly and installation of wheel hub bearings, as well as some matters needing attention when installing wheel hub bearings, I hope it will be helpful to car owners.

Step 1. When replacing the wheel hub bearing, first disassemble the steering knuckle

(1) Drive the vehicle onto the lift and remove the front wheels.

(2) Remove the self-locking nut at the end of the half shaft. It will be difficult to remove this nut. You can ask another maintenance person to step on the brake pedal to provide reverse torque

(3) Remove the brake caliper and use a wire hook to hang it on the car body to avoid stress on the brake pipeline .

(4) Remove the nut under the steering tie rod ball head and use ball nose pliers to separate the steering knuckle from the steering tie rod . It is strictly prohibited to use a hammer to directly hit the ball head to avoid permanent damage.

(5) Remove the 2 bolts connecting the steering knuckle and the shock absorber, and remove the 3 connecting bolts between the steering knuckle and the lower swing arm. At this point, the steering knuckle can be removed from the vehicle body.

Step 2. Disassemble the old wheel bearing

(1) Remove the brake disc, sensor and other accessories from the steering knuckle.

(2) Use special tools to push the wheel hub out of the steering knuckle. For general comprehensive maintenance companies, it is likely that they do not have special tools. In this case, a socket of appropriate size can be used instead. Since the inner ring of the wheel hub bearing and the wheel hub are connected through an interference fit, when the wheel hub is disassembled, the inner ring of the bearing will fall off with the wheel hub.

(3) Use a puller to remove the inner ring of the wheel hub bearing from the wheel hub.

(4) Use circlip pliers to remove the circlips used to position the bearings from both sides of the bearing seat hole on the steering knuckle.

(5) Use a press and a circular spacer of appropriate size to press the old wheel hub bearing out of the steering knuckle.

Step 3. Press in the new wheel bearing

In authorized repair shops, there are corresponding special tools for installing wheel bearings for different models. However, for comprehensive maintenance companies, such conditions are often not available. In this case, the used bearings that have just been removed can be used. This is because the dimensions of the old bearings and the new bearings are exactly the same .

(1) Install the circlip on the outside of the steering knuckle to position the new wheel hub bearing.

(2) Use the old wheel hub bearing outer ring as a spacer to press the new wheel hub bearing into the steering knuckle. After the bearing is completely pressed in, install the circlip on the other side in place.

(3) Use the old wheel hub bearing inner ring as a pad to press the wheel hub into the steering knuckle

(4) After the installation is completed, turn the wheel hub to check whether it is installed in place and check the oil seal.

Step 4. Install and reset the steering knuckle and other related parts

(1) Install the three bolts connecting the lower swing arm and the steering knuckle with a tightening torque of 35 Nm.

(2) Install the two bolts connecting the steering knuckle and the shock absorber , and their tightening torque is 95 N·m.

(3) Install the nut at the lower end of the steering tie rod , and its locking torque is 35 Nm (4) Install the two bolts connecting the brake caliper and steering knuckle , and its locking torque is 25 Nm .

(4) Install the two bolts connecting the brake caliper and steering knuckle (Figure 16), and the tightening torque is 25 N-m.

(5) Install the self-locking nut at the end of the half shaft, and its tightening torque is 265 N·m.

(6) Install the tires and the tightening torque of the tire bolts is 110 Nm. At this point, the replacement of the front wheel hub bearing is completed.

At this point, the operation of replacing the front wheel hub bearing has been completed. Below, China Bearing Network will share with you some matters that need to be paid attention to when installing the wheel hub bearing.

The main points are as follows:

(1) When installing a new wheel hub bearing, if you do not have special tools, you can use the used bearing that has just been removed. Note: When pressing the bearing into the steering knuckle, the inner ring of the bearing must not be stressed, otherwise the bearing will be damaged; when pressing the hub into the bearing, ensure that the inner ring of the bearing is stressed evenly.

(2) Before installing the new wheel H bearing, clean the bearing seat hole on the steering knuckle. Before installation, you can use a hammer to gently tap the bearing into the bearing seat to facilitate positioning.

(3) Maintenance personnel should always pay attention to the condition of the bearings to avoid deflection when operating the press. Also pay attention to the reaction force of the press lever on the opponent. If you find increased resistance or other abnormalities, you should stop the operation in time.

(4) The locking torque of the half-shaft end nut is as high as 265 Nm, so it will be more laborious both during disassembly and installation. You can ask another maintenance person to depress the brake pedal to provide reverse torque, or you can remove and install this nut before lifting the vehicle to provide reverse torque through the friction between the tire and the ground.

(5) Before disassembling the shock absorber, its position should be marked to avoid affecting the wheel camber angle. If its position changes, four-wheel alignment should be performed and the wheel alignment parameters should be corrected.

(6) During the process of assembling each component, a torque wrench should be used to tighten the bolts and nuts according to the standard torque value.
